I am an average woman who has struggled with my weight and my low self-esteem my whole life. I gain weight very easily and I have always turned to food for comfort. I have had a very challenging life, growing up in an alcoholic household with an abusive step father who would beat me routinely. His physical abuse wasn't as painful as his emotional and verbal abuse. I was told daily that I was worthless, stupid, trampy and wouldn't amount to anything in life. As a result I was attracted to men who would repeat those words and behavior. I grew up feeling inadequate in every way.
Being Italian, food was a big part of my life. Meal time was festive and food was love in my home. My mother would prepare our favorite meals to show my siblings and I that she loved us. Since we were very poor, it was either feast or famine in our home. Mom managed to create incredible meals with little money and a green thumb. She was proud of her cooking and it was delicious. I discovered early in life that food was comforting and I had no problem cleaning my plate and ask for seconds to gain approval. Food throughout my life has always been more than fuel for my body. It has been my friend, how I coped with unhappy memories and a way to feel accepted by my family.
My weight has gone up and down my whole life. In order for me to lose weight and keep it off, it wasn't enough to know what to eat, I had to change my habits. I discovered the secret was in my subconscious mind.
